The International Union of Railways (UIC) develops and distributes International Railway Solutions (IRS) to help railway stakeholders, to achieve further harmonisation and collaboration.

This IRS:

- deals with the requirements for vehicles used in passenger night services offering sleeping accommodation,

- sets out special and/or additional requirements as well as exemptions from the UIC provisions generally applicable to passenger vehicles,

- defines the principles to be respected when distributing space and describes the modules that can be envisaged for the interior layout of passenger vehicles (e.g. compartments, toilets),

- provides requirements to ensure a higher level of safety for passengers and accompanying staff,

- contains requirements about:

  • • berths,
  • • couchettes,
  • • modules,
  • • doors,
  • • water and power supply,
  • • air conditioning, lighting,
  • • intercom arrangements and public address system.
It integrates in full or in part the following UIC leaflets:
- UIC Leaflet 565-1, 2001, 4th edition
