Railway applications - Passenger vehicles - Special design and fittings feature of vehicles designed for night traffic
The International Union of Railways (UIC) develops and distributes International Railway Solutions (IRS) to help railway stakeholders, to achieve further harmonisation and collaboration.
This IRS:
- deals with the requirements for vehicles used in passenger night services offering sleeping accommodation,
- sets out special and/or additional requirements as well as exemptions from the UIC provisions generally applicable to passenger vehicles,
- defines the principles to be respected when distributing space and describes the modules that can be envisaged for the interior layout of passenger vehicles (e.g. compartments, toilets),
- provides requirements to ensure a higher level of safety for passengers and accompanying staff,
- contains requirements about:
- • berths,
- • couchettes,
- • modules,
- • doors,
- • water and power supply,
- • air conditioning, lighting,
- • intercom arrangements and public address system.
