Due to the limited market share (with a few exceptions) no diesel engine is designed as a dedicated railway engine.
The UIC Code defines the general conditions and methods for type and series approval tests.
This IRS deals with the procedure for the approval of diesel engines for railway traction.
The type approval tests for new types of diesel engines for railway traction are defined in IRS 60623-2.
The series tests and acceptance conditions for diesel engines for railway traction are defined in IRS 60623-3.
The exhaust gas emission limits and the method for their determination are defined in IRS 60624.
The positive results of the tests carried out are the only guarantee that the specific railway requirements and emission limits are met.
This IRS does not define the principles applicable to the UIC label nor describe the UIC label issuance process; both are defined in IRS 50541-00.
