This article describes the state of play and the perspectives for the implementation of AI in the European railway sector.

For example, it describes the possibilities of AI for face recognition in the fight against terrorism, chatbots and virtual assistants for passengers, sales prediction through Machine Learning, Robotics in railway stations, Robotics in train, Robotics in warehouses, and predictive maintenance on rolling stock and infrastructure.
 
It highlights the key success factors and the role of the UIC for the successful implementation of AI in the railway sector.
