This IRS provides guidelines for the design of railway bridges to meet operational and environmental noise requirements. It is intended to support infrastructure managers and designers in achieving track continuity, minimizing maintenance, and reducing noise and vibration emissions.

The document emphasizes the importance of designing bridges that:
- Ensure smooth transitions between embankments and bridge structures,
- Accommodate continuous welded rail (CWR) to avoid expansion joints and improve track stability,
- Provide adequate ballast thickness to protect waterproofing and support mechanized maintenance,
- Include noise mitigation measures, such as resilient mats, under sleeper pads, and structural damping techniques.

Special attention is given to:
- Track alignment and stiffness uniformity across bridge and formation,
- Structural design considerations to limit vibration transmission and resonance,
- Safety provisions, including derailment protection and staff access for maintenance,
- Compatibility with both ballasted and ballastless track systems, with examples provided for steel and concrete bridge decks.

The IRS integrates and updates content from UIC Leaflet 717, and references additional UIC documents (e.g., UIC Leaflet 774-3, UIC Leaflet 776-1, UIC Leaflet 776-2, UIC Leaflet 777-2) and Eurocode standards (EN 1990, EN 1991-2) where applicable. It is designed for use in both CEN countries and non-EU contexts, offering harmonized practices for international railway operations.

It integrates in full or in part the following UIC leaflets:
- UIC Leaflet 717

It aims to complement the following standards:
- none
