Specifications for passenger information displayed electronically in trains
Summary
UIC Leaflet 176 describes passenger information displayed electronically in homogenous train consists worked in international traffic. The leaflet distinguishes between obligatory information
and optional information. It refers to UIC Leaflets 580 (Inscriptions, markings, route indicators and number plates) and 440 (Public address
systems in RIC coaches) .
The leaflet defines the type and location of information to be displayed inside and outside vehicle entrance vestibules and saloons, as well as seat reservation display. Minimum requirements are given to optimise their legibility. Proposals are also made regarding display during various stages of the train journey. Figures giving example layouts for various displays complete the information.
Given that display technology is constantly evolving, the leaflet does not refer to any specific technical systems. It suggests possible technical options for uniform data supply, its transmission in the train as well as the man-machine interface. It also briefly covers measures to take in the event of disruption in the passenger information system central computer.
The leaflet carries mandatory status. It is clear from the wording of the text which of the provisions are recommendatory in nature.
The leaflet applies to vehicles with a new design ordered in future and to existing vehicles undergoing extensive renovation and conversion.
