The International Union of Railways (UIC) fosters global cooperation among rail stakeholders, including manufacturers, associations, and public authorities, to advance innovation and sustainability. Its core activities include developing programmes to address rail sector needs, publishing International Railway Standards (IRSs), and promoting interoperability and environmental performance improvements.

With only 57% of European rail lines electrified and increasing restrictions on diesel engines, alternatives such as hydrogen-powered trains are gaining momentum. The EU strongly supports hydrogen in transport, and manufacturers are rapidly developing the related technologies.

In response, UIC has launched the HYDROGEN_RISKS project to study the operational and safety aspects of hydrogen use in rail. The H2 RISK project seeks to capitalise on the early stage of hydrogen technology integration into rail systems to establish a robust technical and safety framework. Its objectives are structured around four key pillars.
