UIC Global Rail Sustainability Report 2025
Welcome to the fourth edition of the UIC Global Rail Sustainability Report. Since its launch in 2022, the report has continued to provide a global overview of how the rail sector is contributing to sustainable development and supporting the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As the world enters the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035), rail’s role within sustainable transport systems is increasingly important, given that it offers significant advantages in terms of energy efficiency, safety, accessibility, resilience, and reduced environmental impact, while helping connect people, regions, and economies.
This Global Rail Sustainability Report builds on previous editions by using updated data, indicators, and international case studies from UIC members and partners worldwide. It draws on the latest Rail Sustainability Index (RSi), Traction Energy and Emissions Database (TED), and Railisa platform results, providing insight into the sustainability performance and progress of the global rail sector.
As the report series continues to evolve, it reaffirms UIC’s commitment to transparency, collaboration, and evidence-based reporting. By sharing experiences, good practices, and measurable progress from across the world, the report aims to support informed decision-making and strengthen the role of rail in advancing sustainable transport and the SDGs.
