Long train
This report documents the results of simulations carried out within the context of the Long Train project. The simulations were carried out in accordance with the methodology described in UIC Leaflet 421, comparing “reference trains” with new trains formed by coupling between two and four trains. The results demonstrate the need to increase the number of traction units when overall train length increases. In trains of up to 700 m — and up to 1,000 m in some cases — a train consist of two traction units is appropriate. However, in longer trains of 1,500 m and above, four traction units are required. All of the results obtained from the simulations may change depending on the technology used for the distributed power system, as well as the minimum track radius and the admissible longitudinal compressive forces of the wagons.
