Braking Issues - Testing the K brake block Jurid J816M Simplified brake tests in winter conditions Sweden December 2007
The results of the line and bench tests using the Honeywell Jurid J816M showed that:
- during simplified slip tests at various brake assessment speeds, braking distance is on average 9 to 10 % longer at 100 and 120 km/h. This includes inconsistencies due in part to ice build-up on the brake block and rigging;
- during the UIC bench tests at the Becorit facility, braking distance increases by an average of 5,6 % at 100 km/h and 6,6 % at 120 km/h.
The overall evaluation of the line tests results, taking the effects of ice build-up into account, corresponds fairly well with the UIC winter bench tests using the Jurid J816M. The increase in braking distance lies within the upper reaches of the range of acceptable values and can thus be considered as displaying satisfactory winter braking properties for winter operation.
