Wheels - Definition of rig braking test parameters for technical approval of wheels of 680 mm nominal diameter, as per UIC leaflet 510-5
Within the framework of the works of B 169.13A, a feasibility study was submitted to sub-committee SC 08, with the aim of extending the application of UIC leaflet 510-5 “Technical approval of solid wheels” to wheels of 680 mm nominal diameter.
The aim of this study is to demonstrate that it is possible to implement the development, manufacture and approval of wheels of 680 mm nominal diameter in accordance with uniform criteria defined in UIC leaflet 510-5.
This report presents the works carried out to determine the thermo-mechanical stresses used to dimension wheels of 680 mm nominal diameter. It recommends a total power of 36 kW for 45 min at a speed of 60 km/h.
However, due to lack of finance, it has not been possible during these works to pursue the development, manufacture and approval of a wheel of 680 mm nominal diameter, which observes the criteria of UIC leaflet 510-5 when it is subjected to such stresses.
Additional investigations to validate the works carried out are necessary before any adaptation of UIC leaflet 510-5 for the thermo-mechanical dimensioning of wheels of 680 mm nominal diameter.
